I've been trying to get more involved in my local community due to my desire to get the hell out of my parents' home (and I'm still waiting for word on when the renovations on the apartment in town I paid the deposit and initial rent for in town will be done), and yesterday evening was an open mic event at a local gathering place. I had a hell of a time finding the place in the first place, but it was in a second floor nook of a business complex along the main highway running through the town. There were a surprisingly high number of local artists and performers, and after some local musican played a few crappy songs, I volunteered to share a poem I wrote for the local writers guild's forthcoming Texas-themed anthology, preceded by mention of my own art (but I could only show a few examples on my iPhone). I was really hesitant about sharing the poem since it has content certain groups I know wouldn't take kindly to (i.e. the BLM and Woke crowds, and there were a few blacks in the place). I did mention the "sensitive" content of my poem and apologized while reciting it, but anyway, here's the poem, a sonnet like Shakespeare specialized in, and which I've used in my own poetic works since it's very structured:
Texas, Texas, beloved mighty state,
The Hood of Cavazos as your center;
Your inconsistent climate stirs my hate,
But freely the Lord is my dear Mentor.
The Halls of Montezuma you escaped
Santa Anna with his makeshift left leg;
The Empire of America you shaped,
For more subservient as they would beg.
The Empire you left when Dishonest Abe
Equivocated on those dark of skin,
But vile Bill Sherman’s wrath you would evade
Well after Lincoln went to Hell in sin.
Should Texas ever a doomed fate such meet?
Please let not history itself repeat.
I actually got good reception for my poem and shared a few personalized business cards I had ordered for my art business-in-construction, and another local artist had a chat with me about getting in touch via email (but she hasn't gotten back to met yet). There's an afternoon event in Killeen I'll be going to maybe share some more cards (since I have a shitload), so that'll get me out of the house, but I'll be home for dinner.
